Since the early 1990s Vietnam has experienced a spectacular decrease in poverty. The percentage of the Vietnamese population living below the poverty line fell from 58 % in 1993 to 14.5% in 2008. Twenty-five million people have thus emerged from poverty in 15 years. In urban areas in 2008, only 3.5 % of the population is considered to be poor, even though the cost of living continues to rise.Vietnam owes its people’s increase in wealth to the remarkable economic growth it has achieved over the past 20 years, one of the fastest in the world. The country thus recently entered the sphere of the emerging countries.
